嘻哈/街舞课程
course description
This program integrates multiple focuses in street dance technique, choreography and freestyle, and through a community building framework offers access for students to a college-level Hip Hop and street dance learning environment. In partnership with UCLA Summer Sessions and Versa-Style: Performance • Education • Community, an operating Foundation dedicated to empowering young artists through Hip Hop and street dance learning.
The curriculum at the Hip Hop/Street Dance Summer Institute includes daily technique classes ranging from forms such as Popping, Locking, Hip Hop, and House, to classes dedicated to dances from the Latin and African diasporas, forms that provided the inspiration and roots for Hip Hop and street dance. Each technique class will also explore the history of the dance style, where students can develop an appreciation of the various heritages associated with each lineage. Further, students will study dance composition, a choreography class where students learn how to create and structure their own dance works within a Hip Hop and street dance framework, as well as a course dedicated to the art of freestyle movement, a cultural norm in Hip Hop and street dance.
The program also offers a range of other lessons in spoken word/poetry/rap, Hip Hop and street dance history, college readiness and opportunities for discussion, critical thinking and bridging difference using art as a tool for individual and community growth. After each rigorous day of dancing, training, sharing, and studying, the students return to their dorms and participate in fun and engaging evening activities hosted by Program Counselors who are all undergraduate UCLA Dance majors. This provides students with the opportunity to form important community bonds and experience what it’s like to live in a college dormitory.
When determining admission, the committee evaluates students based on the following:
- Written responses to the application questions
- Overall effort put into the application process as a whole
- Level of experience and training as displayed in video submissions
